Causes of Infertility

The causes of infertility are varied, yet with the extensive experience and dedication to the field that you’ll find at the New York Fertility Institute, different options and strategies are available for working through most situations. Our (professionals) Physicians will help you determine the very best course of treatment to pursue.
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, or PID, blocked fallopian tubes, endometriosis (where the endometrial lining grows outside the uterus), cysts on the ovaries, intrauterine adhesions, uterine polyps, fibroid uterus, and other conditions may interfere with a woman’s ability to conceive. These conditions can often be addressed through laparoscopic surgery, Hystroscopic surgery and/or if that fails, through in vitro fertilization.
  • If the woman is older, additional techniques for improving the effectiveness of the IVF cycle, including Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection ICSI, assisted hatching and pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), can be utilized.
  • Immunological infertility, where a woman’s compromised immune system may be contributing to her problems with conception and maintaining the pregnancy can be addressed in a number of ways. Different therapy can be explored, including blood thinning medications ,(or) intravenous gamma globulin, intralipids, use of Steroids depending upon the facts of a specific case.
  • If the male partner’s quality and/or quantity of sperm is low, then sperm washing, IUI (intrauterine insemination), and other advanced treatments are available, or a sperm donor may be considered.
  • If egg production is severely compromised due to ovulation problems, or if the quality of the ova are (low) poor, then egg donation might be a viable alternative.
  • Molecular genetics allows for examination of the embryos to select only healthy ones for transfer. If there is a chromosomal abnormality detected, the chances of a successful pregnancy are reduced, so minimizing this risk through advanced laboratory analysis techniques, including FISH, can improve outcomes.
  • If there are deficiencies with the uterus that would prevent carrying a fetus to term, a gestational carrier can be the best choice.
  • When a woman has suffered repeated pregnancy loss, treatment options to pursue may include PGD to assess the health of the embryos prior to implantation, Immunological aspect of repeated pregnancy loss can be tested and be treated appropriately ,along with a combination of other measures to improve outcomes.
  • You have direct control over the avenues you choose to pursue in managing your fertility. We assume the role of advisor and guide you through the process, and give you the information you need to make wise decisions about your treatment.
